David Sibley's field guide to birds helped spike renewed interest in birding much like Roger Tory Peterson did in past generations. Sibley's artwork is not on beautiful but purposely depicts birds to show off particular field marks to greatly assist in the field. The guide is larger than others (but does have Eastern and Western versions which are smaller) but still qualifies as a "field" guide. I try to always carry it on long birding outings and despite having a greatly battered cover, the binding and pages have stood up to several years of hard abuse.
